Who are we?
The South Burnett Pantry was born out of a concern for vulnerable families struggling with cost of living expenses. Concerned community members started the South Burnett Pantry with short term personal loans that got things going. Those members also loaned fridges and freezers, other equipment, vehicles, trailers and most importantly time and energy to ensure the enterprise could start helping the wider community. Members of the South Burnett Pantry have a heart to support others in need, lend a listening ear and help people connect with appropriate health and welfare agencies. Over the past nine years we have grown through successful grant applications and support from the local government, local businesses, churches, service groups and individuals. We operate mainly though cost recovery and the generous support of a great volunteer group who contribute many hours each week to ensure we can help those in need.
What do we do?
The South Burnett Pantry provides a hamper of food that includes a range of fresh produce, diary products, meats, tinned and packaged foods, toiletries, household items, baby items and more, to help supplement food costs to families. The weekly handling fee of $40.00 funds the hamper contents and provides items that would normally be 3-4 times higher in cost in a shop/supermarket. We also enjoy seeing people come into the Pantry where there is a chance to sit and relax, make a new friend or talk to a supportive person around the free lunch.
Our health and welfare connections include support from South Burnett Ministries 'Church in the Market Place', Centacare, Community Health, Salvation Army, Graham House, CTC Services, Uniting Care Community Services, St. Vincent de Paul Society, South Burnett Regional Council, community and churches.
We also ensure thirteen schools are able to access supplies collected from Foodbank Brisbane for their school breakfast programs. Without our support many schools would not have this program.
We also support Danny's Diner weekly free community dinner program for the needy, and the Uniting Care Womens' Refuge when we have excess food supplies.
